Albuquerque swamp cooler guide
A seasonal checklist for evaporative coolers in the Albuquerque area, drawn from DOE/PNNL, University of Arizona Extension, MasterCool, the water utility, and the National Weather Service.
Quick facts
- Sizing zone: 30 air changes per hour on the PNNL map. Run the calculator.
- Monsoon season: June 15 – Sept. 30 (NWS). The NWS lists 4.47" as average monsoon-season rain for the Albuquerque area (NWS stats).
- Sunport elevation: 5,354.9 ft (FAA).
- Reference water use: about 7,261 gal/yr for a 1,500 sq ft Albuquerque home, before bleed-off (PNNL).
PNM rebates (2026)
PNM lists rebates of up to $400 for large down-draft or side-draft units with 12" rigid media (8" media doesn't qualify) and up to $200 for window units with rigid media. The rebates cover purchases from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, 2026, while funds last, with a limit of two per account.
Terms updated July 23, 2026. Check PNM's current terms and qualifying model list before you buy.
Spring start-up checklist
- Turn the power off at the unit before working on it.
- Remove the cover and clean the pan and cabinet (UA Extension, PNNL).
- Install new aspen pads, or rinse rigid media with a garden hose. MasterCool says to put the steeper flute angle toward the inlet (MasterCool manual).
- Check the belt. UA Extension says it should move about 1/2" when pressed. MasterCool specifies about 3/4" deflection under 3 lb of force on its units, so follow your model's manual. Oil the bearings if your model calls for it.
- Reconnect the water line, then check the float. UA Extension says the water level should sit about 1" below the top of the tray (UA Extension).
- Run the pump first and make sure the pads soak evenly. Look for leaks (UA Extension).
- Clean clogged distribution holes or nozzles. PNNL suggests vinegar for mineral buildup.
- Open windows or relief vents: about 2 sq ft per 1,000 CFM (PNNL).
During the season
- Run the pump a few minutes before the fan so the pads are wet (UA Extension).
- UA Extension says waiting until it's 85°F outside, instead of 79°F, to turn the cooler on uses 50% less water. Use fan-only mode in the evening.
- If the cooler will sit idle for more than a few days, drain the pan. PNNL warns standing water can breed mosquitoes and bacteria, including Legionella.
- Mid-summer: check the water level, float, pads, and bleed-off line (UA Extension).
- Expect weaker cooling on humid monsoon days (see the calculator humidity box).
Winterizing checklist
- Shut off and disconnect the water supply. Drain the unit, the line, and the pump, and blow out the line (MasterCool, UA Extension).
- Unplug or switch off power to the cooler (MasterCool).
- Dissolve mineral scale with vinegar. Drain, scrape, and dry the pan; UA Extension suggests coating the pan with a sealer.
- Clean the water trough or distribution holes.
- Install a cover (PNNL, MasterCool).
- Remove window units for the winter (PNNL).
When to replace pads
- Aspen: UA Extension suggests new pads each spring. Replace any pad that is torn, worn, or mildewed (PNNL).
- Rigid media: MasterCool says the original media has "a standard life of 5 years, but in areas with very high mineral content the media may have to be replaced sooner."
- Find your size: pad finder.
Hard water in Albuquerque
The Albuquerque Bernalillo County Water Utility Authority says its water ranges from "moderately hard to hard," depending on the blend of sources. It also says dissolved minerals are "the residue that collects on evaporative coolers during the summer months." To convert a hardness reading in ppm to grains per gallon, divide by 17.1. Use the water-quality-by-zone lookup to see your area (ABCWUA FAQ).
- A bleed-off valve drains some water to cut mineral buildup, but it increases water use by 10–50% (PNNL). MasterCool suggests starting at 1–2 gallons per hour.
- MasterCool says: "Do not connect the water supply to any soft water applications."
- UA Extension warns not to use cooler drain-off water on plants, because it's high in minerals.
