What size swamp cooler do I need? 7 checks before you buy

Short answer: multiply your floor area by ceiling height, multiply by 20–40 air changes per hour (30 for Albuquerque on the DOE/PNNL map), and divide by 60. A 1,500 sq ft home with 8 ft ceilings at 30 ACH comes to 6,000 CFM. The seven checks below cover what that number leaves out.

1 Measure the space you're cooling

Sizing starts with volume, which is floor area times ceiling height. For vaulted rooms, use the average height. PNNL's formula is CFM = (cubic feet × ACH) ÷ 60, and PNNL says sizing "is not an exact science."

Next step: Enter your square feet or room dimensions in the swamp cooler calculator.

2 Pick the air-change rate for your climate

PNNL says most manufacturers suggest 20 to 40 air changes per hour (ACH). PNNL's zone map shows 20 ACH for the Great Basin, 30 for the Southwest (including Albuquerque), 40 for coastal Southern California and the Midwest and East, and 60 for the humid Southeast. The map is coarse, so look at the whole 20–40 range too.

Next step: Choose your region in the calculator. It shows your zone's value and the 20–40 range side by side.

3 Compare delivered airflow, not the number on the box

Model numbers like 4800 or 6500 are usually an Industry Standard Rating, which Phoenix Manufacturing calls "a numeric index for use in comparing units of different manufacturers." Delivered airflow is lower. Phoenix lists its Frigiking FD/FS 650 (6,500 rating) at 4,218 CFM at 0.3" static pressure, and its AeroCool 6801C (6,800 rating) at 4,375 CFM.

Next step: The calculator lists the smallest real model from each brochure that delivers your target at 0.0" or 0.3".

4 Check how humid your summers get

Swamp coolers need dry air. PNNL says they work best where the 1% design wet-bulb temperature is 70°F or lower, and can work up to about 74°F with reduced performance. In PNNL's examples, 100°F air at 10% humidity comes out near 73°F, but 95°F air at 50% humidity comes out near 84°F. NWS Albuquerque's monsoon season runs June 15 to September 30.

Next step: Try your own numbers in the supply-air temperature estimator.

5 Choose aspen pads or rigid media

PNNL describes aspen-pad coolers as about 70% effective. Phoenix lists its 8" rigid media at 80% and 12" media at 89%. MasterCool says its rigid media has a "standard life of 5 years," and may need replacing sooner where water is very hard. The two types aren't interchangeable, because each cooler is built for one or the other. PNM's 2026 rebate covers large units with 12" rigid media; 8" units don't qualify (check current terms).

Next step: See which pads or media fit a model in the pad finder.

6 Plan where the air will exit

A swamp cooler pushes fresh air through the house, replacing it every 2 to 3 minutes (PNNL), so the air needs a way out. PNNL (citing PG&E) calls for 2 sq ft of unrestricted relief opening per 1,000 CFM: a 4,000 CFM cooler needs about 8 sq ft of open window or vent. Screens and louvers reduce free area.

Next step: The calculator shows the opening size for your CFM.

7 Plan for mounting, water, and upkeep

PNNL notes that roof-mounted units can be hard to reach for maintenance and can cause roof leaks, while ground- or wall-mounted units are easier to maintain. PNNL recommends at least two fan speeds and a vent-only mode, and maintenance at least twice a year. For water, PNNL lists about 7,261 gallons a year for a 1,500 sq ft Albuquerque home, plus about 50% more with a bleed-off valve.

Next step: Read the Albuquerque guide for seasonal checklists, or request a free quote if you'd like a local pro to look at your setup.
